Cathy Camper

Cathy Camper began making seed art in 1989, to enter in the Minnesota State Fair seed art competition. Since the 1960s, the State Fair sponsored this art show, encouraging people to create mosaic-type art, to help promote Minnesota seeds and crops. At the time, most of the seed art was pretty conventional. As an Arab-American, Camper began creating icons of people of color, both real and imaginary, that she admired: Haile Selassie, Malcolm X, Nina Simone, Xena, El Vez, Frida Kahlo and more. She's also done commissioned wedding portraits, dog portraits, movie props and illustrations, and will have seed art in Amy Sedaris' next book, due out November 2010.

During the fair Cathy will have drop-in seed art workshops for people of all ages to try their hand at making seed art. She'll have artwork for viewing and for sale, and she'd be glad to share anecdotes and advice - please stop by!

Ro Zinniger

Sunday will be particularly sweet. Ro Zinniger of RoZ’s Sweet Art Studio in San Marcos (www.rozsweetartstudio.com)  is organizing a delicious menu of activities, including a booth in which people can have their cake and eat it, too. She reports, “Visitors can purchase a cupcake for $1, then decorate it – with professional assistance – using a diverse sprinkles and icings.”

Culinary professionals and amateurs will participate in a cake décor contest, with a resultant Gallery of Cakes. The Creative Confection Club of North San Diego will coordinate periodic Cake Walks throughout the day using cakes baked, decorated and donated by Palomar College students.

RoZ states, “I’m very excited to participate in ArtSplash. I want to show people that art comes in all media. Sugar is definitely an artistic medium.”

The icing on the cake for ArtSplash coordinators is twofold, Miringoff relates. “The first is the joy of seeing 30,000 people of all ages and from all walks of life enjoying an al fresco arts adventure. The second is knowing the event brings people together for a great cause. As a community celebration for arts education, ArtSplash proceeds benefit arts and music programs in North County schools. And that’s sweet music to our ears!”
