ARTSPLASH 2009 OFFERS COLORFUL PALETTE OF ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

Annual Chalk Art Festival is a Carlsbad Fall Classic and Southern California Destination Event – September 26-27 ArtSplash Features Masterpieces of Chainsaws, Dirty Cars & Recycled Electronics

Carlsbad, CA … Carlsbad’s exciting fall classic – the ArtSplash chalk art festival – dives into town on September 26-27, 2009. Typically, some 30,000 people from around San Diego County and throughout Southern California enjoy the many facets of this free, family-oriented, alfresco event on Armada Drive between Cannon Road and Palomar Airport Road.

ArtSplash takes place 10 am-6 pm, Saturday, and 10 am-5 pm, Sunday. Both admission and parking are free, as are art demonstrations, hands-on art-making opportunities and music and entertainment, including Fern Street Circus on Sunday. Proceeds benefit arts and music programs in North County San Diego schools.

ArtSplash Chairperson Joni Miringoff believes the magic of ArtSplash lies in its accessibility. She explains, “In contrast to ordinary arts festivals, in which event-goers simply view art, ArtSplash invites people to create artworks of all kinds.”

Demos and “Dirty”

In addition to the popular features ArtSplash visitors have come to enjoy – including magnificent replica paintings that come alive on the street as people watch and the Family Art Carnival in which children are encouraged to let their creativity soar with a variety of hands-on projects -- the seventh annual ArtSplash offers exciting new opportunities for inspiration through demonstrations by artists James Lukinich, Scott Wade and Joey Chavez.

Wood sculptor James Lukinich will demonstrate his chainsaw handiwork while selling his creations, the likes of which grace his hometown of Alpine, the Lions, Tigers and Bears organization in East County and private residences throughout the southwestern United States. Some of his work is carved from logs of trees that he has removed. He also does on-site carving as well as totems, mantle pieces and furniture. Lukinich is an artist-member of the Spanish Village Artists Guild in Balboa Park.

Texan Scott Wade has gained national acclaim for his quirky “Dirty Car Art” creations. He plans to create a masterpiece on a dusty vehicle throughout ArtSplash weekend. He reports, “I love reproducing the old masters’ paintings, but I’m willing to try almost anything. To me, it’s not so much the subject, but the beauty of the medium that attracts me.” Wade’s Mona Lisa on a Mini Cooper and other unique pieces are displayed at www.dirtycarart.com. Wade declines to divulge what he plans to create at ArtSplash, but it is sure to be memorable as well as ephemeral. Miringoff says, “Scott’s art harmonizes perfectly with the tradition of chalk art celebrated by ArtSplash. Both last only until the next rain, yet endure as an art form.”

Highlighting a Bright Color: Green

Joey Chavez will construct a life-size coral reef comprised of recycled electronic components donated by Our Planet Recycling of Escondido. Chavez says he is looking forward to his demonstration. “I am eager to show the public that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Chavez has become well-known in North County, thanks in part to his signature bull fashioned from old shoes that adorns his JC Gallery and Studio in downtown Oceanside. The bull can be found, along with other Chavez works, at www.jcgalleryandstudio.com.

In addition to the three demos, art from diverse genres will be featured. People also can try their hand at rock-stacking, sand-sculpting, hat-making and other creative endeavors.

Visit the Website, Then Plan to Visit ArtSplash

The website at www.CarlsbadArtSplash.org is brimming with up-to-date information as well as new features such as a Guestbook, Facebook and other innovations. Miringoff says, “Please sign our Guestbook – tell us what you liked about previous ArtSplash events and what you’d like to see this year.”

Taste at ArtSplash , slated to be held from 2-5 pm on Saturday, September 26, will offer a delicious selection of local cuisine, including Italian and Mexican food. The fundraising event has attracted several area schools, who receive half of each $20 ticket sold. Taste tickets can be purchased in advance or on-site. Email gduerst@sbcglobal.net for an updated list of participating restaurants and ticket purchase sites.

“Supporting the schools is the prime reason for the event and for our organization,” Miringoff confirms. “We call it a ‘community celebration for arts education.’ That is our reason for being. We hope that it’s one of visitors’ key reasons for being there. We want to celebrate the creativity inherent in people of all ages and walks of life.”
