TWO ARTSPLASH GRANTS FUND UNIQUE TILE PROJECTS AT CARLSBAD UNIFIED MIDDLE
SCHOOLS
Carlsbad, CA … Refuse receptacles at Carlsbad Unified School District’s Valley
Middle and Aviara Oaks Middle schools are now anything but “trashy,” thanks to
ArtSplash grants. The annual ArtSplash chalk art and entertainment festival,
which takes place on Armada Drive in Carlsbad on September 26-27, 2009, is a
community celebration for arts education. Proceeds benefit arts and music
programs in North County schools.
If the Mona Lisa had attended Valley Middle, she would have approved of the tile
mural depicting her as a Valley Viking. The mural is installed on one of two
concrete trash receptacles created by art teacher, Sue DeWulf, and her band of
artsy students. The receptacles and tiles were purchased through a $640
ArtSplash grant, a $500 City of Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office grant and Valley
Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) funds. DeWulf reports, “The students were
excited to create art that will be a part of their campus for years to come.”
An $800 ArtSplash grant plus ASB monies enabled Aviara Oaks Middle parents of
8th-graders to raise more than $1,200 in support of June 2009 promotion
activities. The tiles, which were donated by Irish Setters, were painted and
affixed to two trash receptacles. Students purchased the tiles for $20 apiece.
ArtSplash Chairperson Joni Miringoff states, “We look forward to another
successful ArtSplash event this September, which will enable us to continue
giving back to our community.” For more information about this year’s event,
